US bank State Street expects the uses of artificial intelligence in finance to “multiply” in the coming years, but stressed that “responsible deployment” is vital as the industry confronts daunting potential security risks.

The call came on the first day of the Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit in Hong Kong, where executives from leading firms including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Pimco and Bridgewater shared their insights on the dawning era of AI finance.

Manoj Bohra, State Street’s chief data and AI officer, said the US multinational bank currently had more than 350 use cases for AI, up from around 150 last year. However, speed could not come “at the cost of responsibility and a governed ecosystem”, he said during a media round table on Tuesday.

As thousands of State Street’s employees were already exchanging ideas with AI for their work, Bohra said the next question was: “Can we create some level of agency for that process so that agents can undertake it?”He said it would be “ideal” for the financial industry “to come together and to say, for agent-to-agent protocol or communication, there is something that we can launch as the standard”.

“We are far from being able to do that at the moment,” he said, but added that State Street was working on a “technology architecture” that would enable the “exchange of information in a safe fashion”.

Bohra said agent-to-agent communication likely would not involve an agent from company A going to company B, because that would mean having “a foreign object sitting in your company”.

Instead, State Street was considering launching a gateway, which would be “the only communication method where an agent can travel back and forth”, according to Bohra.

He said agents would have a “predefined identity” with “only the entitlements that are necessary for that customer and for the processes to be undertaken”.
