Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley won Wisconsin’s governor race, positioning himself to become the state’s first Black leader and allowing Democrats to keep control of the top job in a key presidential battleground.
With 88% of the expected vote tabulated, Crowley had 53.3% to 46.7% for Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Associated Press said.
Crowley, 40, is something of an accidental winner, after narrowly defeating Democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong in a chaotic August primary. He dropped out of the race in July amid weak polling and fundraising, but re-entered 10 days later with the endorsement of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who decided not to seek a third term, and after two other higher-profile candidates exited the race.
