Though still too close to call, Democrats are also favored to win attorney general races over Republicans in Iowa, Kansas and Ohio.

Democratic attorneys general have already played a role in challenging Trump administration policies in court, and having more of them in power in a more diverse mix of states will make them an even bigger thorn in the side of the federal government. Of the 31 contests on Tuesday, Democrats held onto the attorney general offices in 16 states and Washington, D.C., and lost none. Republicans held onto nine.
