Democrats captured control of the US House of Representatives and won a majority of the country’s governorships in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to the latest US media reports on Thursday.

Democrats had won 247 seats in the 435-member House compared with 153 for Republicans as of 1818GMT Thursday, well above the 218 needed for a majority, with the remaining races still undecided. Democrats also won control of the Senate with a 54-44 majority. According to US media reports, Democrats flipped Republican-held seats across several states.

In Pennsylvania’s 7th District, Bob Brooks defeated Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, while Denise Powell won in Nebraska’s 2nd District and Jamie Ager prevailed in North Carolina’s 11th District.

In Iowa, Christina Bohannan defeated Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in the 1st District, and Sarah Trone Garriott defeated Rep. Zach Nunn in the 3rd District.

Democrats also flipped seats in Wisconsin, including those held by Reps. Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden.

In California’s 48th District, Marni von Wilpert won, while Teresa Benitez-Thompson prevailed in Nevada’s 2nd District. Democrats also flipped several seats in Michigan.

In Louisiana’s 5th District, Democrat Patricia Moore and Republican Gabe Firment advanced to a runoff after neither candidate secured more than 50% of the vote.

The Democratic majority will allow the party to control congressional committees and launch investigations when the new Congress convenes in January. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is poised to become the first Black speaker of the House.

Democrats secure governorships Democrats also expanded their control of state governorships, winning 28 states compared with 20 for Republicans, while two races remained undecided. Republicans had entered the election with a 26-24 advantage, Associated Press reported.

US media reported that Democrats flipped governors’ offices in Georgia, Texas, Ohio, and Iowa, while some outlets also reported a flip in Nevada.

In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson, ending more than two decades of Republican control. Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a US state.

In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, ending 30 years of Republican control and becoming the state’s first Latina governor.

Democrat Deb Haaland won New Mexico’s governorship, becoming the first Native American woman elected governor in US history, while David Crowley became Wisconsin’s first Black governor.

In Ohio, Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, and Rob Sand won in Iowa. Republican Byron Donalds retained Florida’s governorship for his party.

Alaska races still undecided In Alaska, both the Senate and governor’s races remained undecided, with about 74% of votes counted, according to media reports.

In the Senate race, Democrat Mary Peltola held a lead of about 600 votes over incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, with 48.2% of the vote, or 102,962 votes, compared with 47.9%, or 102,325 votes, for Sullivan, who is seeking a third term.

Peltola led early in the count before Sullivan overtook her, and the race later tightened considerably, with neither candidate above the 50% threshold.

In the governor’s race to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy, Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins led with 49.1% of the vote, or 103,837 votes. Republican Bernadette Wilson was second with 29.2%, followed by Republicans Dave Bronson with 14.2% and Treg Taylor with 7.5%.

Both races will advance to ranked-choice voting if no candidate wins a majority of first-choice ballots.

Meanwhile, NBC News projected that in Los Angeles, Democratic socialist Nithya Raman, a City Council member, unseated Mayor Karen Bass, who served one term.
