Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser expressed surprise that public trust in the institution has stayed solid after it aggressively raised interest rates to try to rein in stubbornly strong inflation.

“Our overall trust measure has been broadly stable, or even slightly up, over the past 18 months,” Hauser said Thursday in a speech in Canberra. “That’s a welcome, but frankly quite surprising, result over a period in which interest rates rose, and inflation rose well above the target range,” he said, referring to the RBA’s 2-3% inflation band.

The RBA this week delivered its fifth hike of 2026 to take the cash rate to an 18-year high of 4.85%. That’s likely to squeeze mortgage holders as they grapple with higher fuel prices, cost-of-living pressures, rising unemployment and a softening housing market — all of which are driving consumer sentiment deep into pessimistic territory.

The RBA has drawn on feedback from 12,000 Australians via surveys since early last year, Hauser said, acknowledging that the positive results may also reflect trust built up by the central bank over earlier periods.

The central bank’s No. 2 official cautioned that “those reserves may protect trust against poor economic outcomes for a time. But that may run out.”The RBA began raising rates in February to head off inflation, which started accelerating even before the US-Iran war unleashed a global oil-price shock. It has failed to hit the 2.5% midpoint of its inflation target since late 2021.

“Unsurprisingly, trust in our near-term ability to achieve our objectives, looking one year back and one year forward, has fallen materially,” Hauser said. The RBA operates under a dual mandate that aims to achieve price stability and full employment.

Hauser’s remarks come as RBA officials fret over the increasing risk that higher inflation expectations could become embedded. Last month, he noted that a growing share of firms think 3-3.5% inflation is “a new normal.”
