Philippine investigators are examining whether Thomas Markle Jnr, the half-brother of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was involved in alleged child sexual abuse offences as an investigation into their father widens, according to the country’s interior secretary on Thursday.

Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla said witnesses had alleged that underage girls were brought to the younger Markle’s home. Markle Jnr was being treated as a “person of interest”, not a suspect, Remulla told reporters in Manila.

Markle Snr, who has since returned to the United States, has denied the allegations, calling them “sick lies”.

Remulla said investigators had recovered around 7,500 photos and one video depicting boys and girls from Asia, Latin America and Europe who had allegedly been sexually abused. He described the material as “really, really disturbing”.

Markle Jnr handed over four boxes of material, including computers, mobile phones, hard drives and old videotapes, according to local authorities. Police obtained a court warrant last week to examine the devices.
