Hedge funds have been heavy sellers over the last few weeks of debt related to the artificial intelligence buildout, according to Andrzej Skiba, head of BlueBay US fixed income at RBC Global Asset Management.
“We have seen a massive hedge fund capitulation within the space,” Skiba said on Bloomberg Television Thursday. “We have seen positions being collapsed, lots of selling actually going through the market.”A roughly $500 million portfolio of data center loans has been put up for sale, in a rare auction coming just days after a Democratic sweep of US midterm elections raised doubts about the future of many of the projects. Loans for sale include a $25 million slice backing a massive data center site that’s part of OpenAI, SoftBank Group Corp. and Oracle Corp.’s joint Stargate project in New Mexico, according to people familiar with the matter.
Hedge funds have also been selling debt from companies in the media and telecoms sectors, said Skiba. Levered money drove those trades, he added.
Separately, hedge funds have been dumping tech stocks. Last month, they retreated from the sector at the fastest pace in at least a decade, according to Goldman Sachs Inc.’s prime desk.
Skiba has previously said that AI was a “bust” for fixed-income investors. However, since spreads in the sector widened out significantly, he has become more comfortable owning the debt.
The average cost of bond financing for investment-grade technology borrowers soared to its highest compared to the rest of the US market since 2003, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. Artificial intelligence companies have been active borrowers this week and are expected to issue a lot more debt in support of a multitrillion-dollar buildout.
