Hakeem Jeffries, leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, in Washington, November 4, 2026.

Hakeem Jeffries embodies the consummate politician. His eyes betray no warmth, and he speaks by enunciating each word, as if reciting a school lesson, always accompanied by sweeping hand gestures – a conductor without music. Chuck Schumer, on the other hand, looks every bit his age – 75, having spent 45 of those years as an elected official in Congress. Recognizable by his Brooklyn accent and his reading glasses slipping down his nose, he represents the Democratic gerontocracy, now shaken by a new progressive wave with sharper ideas and more agile communication. Yet it is these two New York lawmakers, respectively leading the party in the House of Representatives and in the Senate, who have to translate the left's extraordinary midterm election triumph into concrete action.

The Democratic majorities are spectacular: as of now, 253 seats in the House and 54 in the Senate. That is enough to allow for a few defections or internal opposition in the future. However, there is no honeymoon period in sight. The stakes are high, the pulse of Trumpism continues to beat and restoring credibility to Congress will be a test for the left.
