Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the state will deploy a large police presence across the country on Saturday as it seeks to avoid a repeat of last month’s violence when cost-of-living protests descended into rioting and looting.
The state will again mobilize around 70,000 police officers and 110 mobile units and security forces plans to carry out tens of thousands of checks on roads and railways.
“The risk is exactly the same as on previous Saturdays,” Nuñez said at a television press conference on Friday. “Tomorrow’s deployment will be maintained at the same level and with the same operational approach.”The wave of protests that began with students blocking high-schools in September has been largely peaceful in recent weeks after the government ramped up security forces following violence and looting Oct. 17. The marches continue to draw large numbers, including on Thursday when labor unions also called strikes.
In addition to the marches in big cities, protests are planned near data centers, according to a coalition of groups known as Stop Dirty Data Centers.
Nuñez said the key to the success of security operations on Saturday will depend on “mobility” and “reactivity.”“If there are rioters and looters, we will be ready for them,” he said. “And for those who want to demonstrate peacefully and safely, we will provide security and ensure that the freedom to demonstrate can be exercised normally.”
