How an oil project reignited UK-Argentina Falklands dispute Arthur Sullivan October 8, 2026 Argentina and the UK once fought a war over the Falkland Islands. Now the multibillion-dollar Sea Lion oil project has reignited old tensions, with Buenos Aires seeking to put a stop to the plans.
A huge underwater oil project could transform the Falkland Islands' economy, but it is also fueling a sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the UK Home to less than 4,000 people and located in an isolated corner of the South Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands don't often feature in global business headlines.
However, a UK-Israeli oil exploration project in its waters is stoking long-running tensions between Argentina and the people of the archipelago.
Argentina has laid claim to the islands for two centuries and refers to them as Las Malvinas This 200-year-old dispute over the islands' sovereignty led to a 1982 war between the UK and Argentina though British control was quickly restored after Argentine forces invaded the islands.
A 2013 sovereignty referendum on the islands returned a 99.8% vote in favor of remaining tied to the UK as a self-governing British Overseas Territory. Now the Sea Lion oilfield project has brought the issue back to the surface.
Last month, Argentine President Javier Milei threatened to launch an international legal challenge against the UK unless the project is stopped within two weeks.
The oil project is being operated by Israeli company Navitas Petroleum and the UK's Rockhopper Exploration and has the full support of the Falkand Islands Legislative Assembly, which has pursued the project since 2010. The companies plan to begin extracting oil from the Sea Lion oilfield by early 2028. Milei says the project is "the illegal plundering of our resources" and that he will take the matter to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, an independent judicial body responsible for the application of the United Nations' Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Rally around the flag?
Stacy Bragger, a member of the Falklands Islands' 12-member assembly, told DW that the dispute was "nothing new" and that Argentina is using the oil project as "a vehicle to pursue their sovereignty claim." He thinks Milei may be stepping up rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections in Argentina.
"When there's elections coming up, the Falklands is a very convenient tool to use in order to rally people together and distract them from domestic problems," he said.
Stacy Bragger, a member of the Falkand Islands' Legislative Assembly Henry Ziemer, an analyst with the Americas program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, says the Falklands is "a perennial sore spot in Argentine politics" and that since the 1980s, various governments have raised the issue in an attempt to rally support and to "stoke the fires of nationalism."
He thinks Milei's intervention is noteworthy given that he had previously been open to better relations with the UK on the issue. He agrees that it may be a strategy to "boost approval ratings at a time when the government is under a lot of strong domestic pressure."
Potentially transformative for the Falklands Even if Milei sees political gain in the issue, the possibility of the Sea Lion project being successful would significantly raise the economic stakes for all concerned.
The project has a budget of $1.8 billion (€1.6 billion) and could generate revenues of more than double that for the Falkland Islands. The companies hope that at its peak, the field will produce up to 50,000 barrels per day and could last for up to 35 years.
That would substantially increase the Falklands' current annual GDP which is almost entirely dependent on the volatile fishing sector and tourism. The administration is even looking into the possibility of creating a sovereign wealth fund if the oil project is successful.
"It's a very significant project for us with a lot of potential for our future," said Bragger. "It's been a big effort to get to this point and assuming all goes to plan, we want to retain as much value as possible." However, beyond playing to domestic politics, Milei may also spy an opportunity for Argentina to position itself as an energy player amid the war in Iran and the troubles in the Strait of Hormuz Argentina's President Javier Milei says he is taking legal action against the Sea Lion oilfield project Argentina's own domestic oil sector is growing, with production surging at Patagonia's Vaca Muerta, one of the world's largest shale developments.
Were his legal efforts to prove successful, there may be further gains.
"When natural resources overlay existing territorial disputes and bad blood, that tends to galvanize a lot of conflict," said Ziemer.
However, Bragger counters that Milei and Argentina have no legitimate claim to either the Falklands or whatever oil wealth may be extracted over the coming years.
"They don't respect our right to self-determination," he added. "They don't respect our right to develop our own resources. They just want to colonize us." More economic pressure from Argentina Milei plans to put pressure on the Falklands by stepping up existing economic sanctions. Andrea Clausen, chief executive of the Falklands since 2025, recently described this campaign as "economic warfare." Many international suppliers and shipping companies already refuse to supply the Falklands for fear of angering Argentina. Now, Milei's government has initiated sanctions against 60 people involved in the Sea Lion project.
The project could transform the Falklands' small economy In a televised address last month, he also vowed to sanction the companies involved in the project. Such a move could cast doubt on the project, which previously collapsed in 2014 and 2020, due to financing troubles, oil-price weakness and delays caused by sanctions.
Navitas this week confirmed that two contractors had pulled out of the project due to sanctions concerns and that it was replacing them. There are also concerns that Milei could try to garner international support in favor of his position, with President Donald Trump recently suggesting that US support for the status quo on the islands was "under review." Bragger plays this down, pointing to recent comments from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirming support for the Falklands. Ziemer says it would be "very shocking" if the United States came down on the side of Argentina.
While uncertainty reigns over whether the oil project ultimately gets going or not, there is little expectation that the dispute could lead to a return of armed conflict like in 1982.
"That's a step too far, and the situation would have to dramatically deteriorate before we would see the potential for military conflict," said Ziemer.
