Lithuania’s prime minister on Monday described the recently announced diesel deal between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as “shameful” and “disgraceful,” also questioning whether a written agreement exists.

Speaking to Sky News on the sidelines of Poland’s Warsaw Security Forum, Mindaugas Sinkevicius said he had seen social media posts about the arrangement but no written deal.

"We're not proud of it. It's shameful, disgraceful,” he said. “I'm not sure if it's even underway or if it's just a political claim. I've not seen any deal, written deal, I've just seen the tweets ... not the deal actually."

Asked whether Trump could still be trusted amid concerns over his approach to Putin, the premier replied: "Well, I hope so, I hope so." Sinkevicius also urged Europe to strengthen its ability to act independently.

Asked whether Europe should “go it alone,” he said European countries need to “do as much as we can” and “count on ourselves.”At the same time, he stressed the enduring nature of ties despite changes in political leadership.

"Administrations and politicians change, the bonds remain." Trump has blamed rising fuel prices – a key issue in the looming Nov. 3 congressional midterm elections – on the Russia-Ukraine war rather than the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

On Friday, Trump announced a deal under which Moscow agreed to provide fuel to the US and global markets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the deal as a "gift" to Putin, warning that easing restrictions on Russian diesel exports could help finance Moscow's war effort.
