Good morning. The Republican Party’s election challenge this year comes in large part from groups that shifted toward President Trump in 2024 and have since slipped back—Latino voters and young voters, among them. Trump lost voters under age 30 by a mere 4 percentage points in 2024. Now, they say they will vote for a Democrat over a Republican for Congress by 20 points, the most recent Wall Street Journal poll shows.
The shift among another group could be a more pressing worry. Working-class, white voters—those without a four-year college degree—have been the main pillar of the Trump coalition. Trump won them by more than 30 points in 2024 and by 25 points in 2020. Today, half of working-class, white voters say Trump’s economic policies made the economy worse, while only 28% say they made it better. And the GOP’s lead among this group in the vote for Congress is only 19 points, Journal polling finds.
That’s not a reversion to a prior political status. It’s a new development, and a potential crack in the party’s foundation.
The shift helps explain why elections in many Midwest states are competitive this year. Iowa, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin rank above the national average for share of residents who are white and below the national average for share with a bachelor’s degree.
But just as current polls suggest that the GOP has made only transitory gains among young voters, the question for Democrats is whether any improvement among the white, working-class will be durable. Given the party’s lead among college-educated voters, even a small, but long-term, improvement among those without a degree could put some hard-to-win states in play for Democrats beyond this year.
Jon Ossoff: Georgia’s Democratic senator said he has zero interest in running for the presidency in 2028 and he is focused on getting re-elected to a six-year Senate term.
Inflation number: The consumer-price index for September is scheduled to be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time.

Trump’s Wednesday: The president is scheduled to make two stops for midterm rallies. At 4 p.m. ET he will deliver remarks at Laughlin Bullhead International Airport in Bullhead City, Ariz. At 8:15 p.m. he will hold a rally at Majestic Valley Arena in Kalispell, Mont.
As the damaging revelations piled up, Kimberly Guilfoyle worked the phones. Guilfoyle, who resigned Tuesday as U.S. ambassador to Greece after being asked to do so, dialed up administration officials and people close to President Trump—often in the early hours in Athens—and played down reporting from The Wall Street Journal that suggested she was using her position for personal gain. Guilfoyle was eager to find who was leaking the stories that made her the subject of mockery on late-night talk shows, accusing embassy personnel and her security team, according to people familiar with the matter.
Kelly Ayotte is a bright spot in a difficult election cycle for the GOP. First elected New Hampshire’s governor in 2024, Ayotte has maintained a steady lead in polls over her Democratic opponent, Cinde Warmington, offering a fresh reminder for Republicans about how to capture independent-minded voters in battleground states. Ayotte has played up the state’s low-tax status within New England and quality-of-life benefits—and importantly steered clear of areas where she might end up at odds with the White House.
Katie Zacharia had a rocky debut as White House press secretary. She read directly from a list of Trump’s accomplishments—her voice at times halting—and took just three questions. Some administration officials, watching from their desks, picked up on nervousness in Zacharia’s voice and wondered why Trump had pushed her in front of the cameras so quickly instead of easing her into the job.
