French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged the “legitimate anxieties” of young people amid nationwide high school protests, while condemning violence during demonstrations, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said Wednesday.

Bregeon said Macron believed young people’s concerns had been “politically exploited and transformed into urban violence.”The president denounced what he called “unacceptable scenes” of violence during the demonstrations, particularly on Tuesday, she said.

Macron has asked the government to provide “clear and concrete answers” in the coming weeks, including measures to protect teachers and an assessment of school buildings.

The government has assigned 2,000 of the 3,000 substitute teachers it had pledged to deploy, Bregeon said.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray said earlier Wednesday that more than one-third of the 3,000 substitute teachers had already been deployed to work with students.

The movement’s demands include greater education spending and opposition to the Parcoursup university admissions platform. Macron urged demonstrators to remain calm and respect people and property.

More than 6,800 people, overwhelmingly minors, have been detained since the movement began, according to Le Parisien. The national police watchdog, IGPN, has opened 24 investigations into suspected police violence.
