The departure of UBS Group AG from Switzerland would be a heavy blow for the country, according to one of its domestic competitors.

“It would be a major change if they went,” Vontobel Holding AG Co-Chief Executive Officer Christel Rendu de Lint said in an interview with Bloomberg TV, adding that the bank is a big actor in the Swiss economy and a provider of jobs.

“I would prefer them to stay because in this environment financial services are important to the Swiss economy,” Rendu de Lint said. “It is a brand for the Swiss economy, so losing a major brand is a loss,” she added.

UBS is in the middle of a long-standing dispute with the Swiss government which wants to sharply raise the bank’s capital requirements to prevent a repeat of the 2023 Credit Suisse crisis.

UBS is fighting against the proposed reforms which it claims would severely damage its business model and hurt the domestic economy. The lender has since been looking at all options, including the relocation of its headquarters.

Vontobel, which competes with UBS in businesses including asset and wealth management, itself is in the process of relocating — out of the financial capital Zurich. Earlier this year Vontobel announced that it will move most of its staff in Switzerland and its headquarters from Zurich to a town in the canton of Zug.
