France and Germany agreed Friday on a joint approach to securing the future of the European automotive industry, calling for stronger innovation capacity across the bloc.

"Europe must be a continent that innovates, invests and produces, while protecting the climate and safeguarding jobs. This is the purpose of our commitment and the guiding principle of our joint approach," a joint statement said.

France and Germany agreed on transforming the auto sector while maintaining their climate ambitions. The two countries aim to achieve reductions in CO₂ emissions while enhancing Europe's capacity to develop and manufacture "the next generation of electric vehicles." "This is what European preference means in practice: ensuring that the transition to clean mobility goes hand in hand with investment, innovation and production in France, Germany and across Europe," the statement read.

The readout outlined a French-German proposal for a comprehensive package combining an "ambitious European decarbonisation pathway" with regulatory flexibility to reflect different market realities and technological conditions.

The package also provides incentives for investment, research and development, European production, and resilient supply chains.

"This balanced approach will enable the European Union to pursue its climate objectives while strengthening the technological sovereignty, industrial base and international competitiveness of its automotive industry," the statement added.

"Our objective is clear: a competitive, innovative and decarbonised European automotive industry, producing in Europe and creating the jobs of tomorrow." French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the agreement.

"We hope that this Franco-German dynamic can swiftly lead to an agreement with our partners, for our jobs and our industry," Macron said.

Merz said they agreed on the package "for freedom of choice, technological openness, and upholding climate goals." "This is an investment signal to industry," he added.
