Finance Minister Roland Lescure said he was confident France would be able to pass a budget for next year, citing the constitutional levers the government holds should parliament be unable to agree on a bill.
“I’m convinced of this because we have no choice, and we have the tools to get it passed, so I’m convinced we’ll succeed,” Lescure said on RTL radio on Wednesday. “We have two guardrails: Article 49-3 and decrees on this budgetary highway. If we veer off course, we’ll activate the guardrails.”
The French National Assembly has been debating next year’s budget. The government’s bill features €43 billion ($48 billion) in measures to bring down the deficit and appease financial-market worries about the country’s public finances. Reaching a compromise that would allow for the bills to pass via a vote appears difficult in a deeply divided parliament, and could prove even harder with a presidential election just six months away.
