Truckers began lifting roadblocks across southern Italy on Friday, easing days of disruption that had left supermarket shelves empty as suppliers struggled to get fresh produce, cheese and pasta to customers.

The last major highway blockades in Campania, including around the buffalo mozzarella centers of Caserta and Salerno, were removed overnight, following the reopening of roads in Sicily and Calabria, local police authorities said Friday. Food deliveries were gradually resuming, though progress was uneven after several days of interrupted transport.

The protesters relented after Italy’s government approved more than €115 million ($129 million) in emergency aid to help truckers, farmers and fishing crews offset the surging costs of diesel fuel. The protests over escalating fuel prices had blocked roads and prevented food supplies from reaching supermarkets.

Premier Giorgia Meloni is simultaneously contending with street demonstrations over a range of grievances that have turned violent across Europe, including in Milan. French and Italian authorities have stepped up enforcement ahead of further actions planned this weekend, and Meloni’s government passed new security measures, including tougher penalties on minors.

Clearing the backlog caused by the trucker protests will take at least a week, Vincenzo Di Vella, an executive at pasta maker F. Divella SpA, said Thursday when the aid package was in motion. The company will need to catch up with delayed orders protests while also handling new shipments, he said.

While the demonstrations have eased, the dispute over diesel costs remains unresolved. Some truckers have suspended their protests rather than formally ending them, leaving open the possibility of further disruption if negotiations fail to address their demands.
