Friday morning, Sam exited a hunting store in central Paris, fresh from spending €600 ($671) on weapons designed for self protection.

The shopkeeper, who declined to give his family name for security reasons, owns a costume jewelry store in Les Halles, a sprawling commercial district. His business was spared by rioters who ransacked nearby stores last weekend, but he wants to be prepared in case more violence erupts.

His purchases included a truncheon, as well as a plastic handgun that propels small canisters of a substance similar to tear gas. Unlike in much of the US, purchases of firearms in France are tightly restricted. Sam also hired private security guards with dogs and is boarding up his windows. Despite his concerns, he plans to open for business.

“I never thought it would come to this,” he said. “I’m doing this, but I don’t feel reassured.”Protests last Saturday across France deteriorated into vandalism and violence as roving bands of rioters attacked hundreds of shops, smashing windows and running off with merchandise. The turmoil has since eased, but with protesters calling for another day of unrest this Saturday residents, authorities and shopkeepers are on edge.

Sam bought his gear at l’Armurerie de la Bourse, whose owner, Yves Gollety, chairs the organization that represents weapon sellers across France — a role that gives him a national perspective. His store is seeing extraordinary levels of activity, he said, and it’s not alone. Gollety, who usually caters to hunters and target shooters, estimates sales of weapons for self defense have risen by 10 times in cities that saw the most mayhem, such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Bordeaux.

“People were traumatized by what happened last weekend when they sometimes found themselves on their own, sometimes for two or three hours or the whole day, facing the rioters,” Gollety said. “Shopkeepers, restaurant owners and individuals got scared and are looking to defend themselves. They’re not seeking to take justice into their own hands.”While traditional sales of hunting rifles have collapsed, demand has jumped for pepper sprays, tear gas-like canisters, pistols firing rubber bullets and other non-lethal gear. The increase in sales is “unprecedented,” Gollety said, more pronounced than in past episodes of rioting and civil unrest.

Gollety’s store was open last Saturday but avoided damage, even though other shops in the area were attacked and looted. He plans to open tomorrow, if only to protect his shop.

The Prefecture of Police told business owners to hire more private security agents ahead of Saturday, drawing the ire of many, including Eric Larcheveque, the co-founder of the Crypto hardware wallet maker Ledger. He wrote on X that if the state can no longer protect the people, the French should stop paying taxes.
