Former President Barack Obama speaks at the Michigan Democrats' Get Out the Vote Rally.

Good morning. Former President Barack Obama made a lot of news on Saturday. He tried to rally voters in Michigan and Ohio. In addition to his usual lofty rhetoric, he leveled plenty of sarcasm, including zingers at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“How much time do you think this defense secretary spends looking at himself in the mirror in the morning?”

Obama said. And everyone by now has heard Obama’s Cheesecake Factory line about Trump and the White House. It got laughs. It went viral. But does it still work?

On Oct. 28, 2024, the former Democratic president appeared at a major rally in Philadelphia with Bruce Springsteen and John Legend in an effort to turn out Democratic votes.

Eight days later, Kamala Harris lost Pennsylvania to Donald Trump by about 120,000 votes, and Democratic Sen. Bob Casey lost his seat to David McCormick by roughly 15,000 votes.

Obama isn’t the reason Harris lost in 2024, and it isn’t like Democrats have a deep bench of stars they can put out on the trail.

In addition, some of the people Obama campaigned with in 2024 did win despite Trump’s momentum that year (Senate candidates Ruben Gallego in Arizona, Elissa Slotkin in Michigan and Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin). But does he still have the appeal? Does he still resonate with a new generation of voters who feel burned by politicians?

A curious thing happened in the past 18 months. Several Democrats in Congress began turning on former President Bill Clinton, refusing to back him up over questions about the Epstein files. The lockstep party loyalty that was a Democratic brand for so long, and which former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi helped enforce, is fading. Yes, Obama can pack a house, but can he tip the scales?

Trump’s Monday: President Trump is scheduled to participate in several policy meetings, starting at 11 a.m. ET. Later, he will travel to Corinth, Miss., for a midterm elections rally. What I’m Following Wall Street Journal reporters attended Trump’s midterm rallies last week, and here’s what they learned. The events free Trump from the pressures of the job, critical news coverage and low approval ratings, and they advance the strategy that he can best motivate Republican voters. Trump punctuates his rally speeches with a steady drip of sometimes bizarre, occasionally candid and often comedic comments. Protesters are increasingly making themselves known, and the MAGA merch is ever-flowing.

Attorney General Todd Blanche ups the ante in the Alaska election feud. Blanche offered a combative defense of the Justice Department’s lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska’s Senate race if the Republican candidate loses. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” he said the department filed the lawsuit to prevent voters from being confused by a second Dan Sullivan, who Blanche alleged had been purposely added to the ballot to siphon votes from GOP incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan.

The Supreme Court’s fingerprints are all over the midterms. Several decisions from the court’s conservative majority have rewritten the rules that govern American elections. Perhaps the court’s most visible impact is on TV airwaves in battleground states. Until this year, federal law capped how much money the parties could spend in direct coordination with candidates. The court declared those caps unconstitutional under the First Amendment. What Else Is Happening Mayor Zohran Mamdani is struggling to get a handle on New York City’s homeless encampments.
