Conventional wisdom holds that President Trump has the most at stake in next week’s midterms. Should they win, Democrats have promised investigations, possible impeachment proceedings and sustained oversight that could dominate his final two years in office.
There is truth to that. But the stakes may be nearly as high for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and the broader progressive movement she increasingly represents. Nowhere is that clearer than Michigan, where Ocasio-Cortez has rallied the progressive “Squad” behind Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
Ocasio-Cortez transferred $1 million from her campaign account to support El-Sayed, lent him her national platform and campaigned with him not only in Detroit but in Michigan’s Republican-heavy Upper Peninsula — the kind of territory her political theory requires progressives to compete in.
Put simply, Ocasio-Cortez now shares ownership of the result.
Ocasio-Cortez appears to be positioning herself for 2028; her interest in either a Senate campaign or the White House is hardly secret. She has alluded to higher ambitions, built one of Congress’s largest campaign war chests and remained a leading contender on prediction markets.
Viewed through that lens, her calculation is straightforward: Michigan offers perhaps the clearest test of whether a progressive can win a statewide general election in a genuine battleground state that twice voted for Donald Trump. An El-Sayed victory would support her argument, in her own words, that any progressive “can win anywhere.”There’s also a personal benefit, if she’s right. If El-Sayed wins, even with a strong national environment boosting Democrats, Ocasio-Cortez will receive a considerable boost just as attention turns toward the 2028 primaries.
Conversely, a Mike Rogers victory would deal a serious blow to the argument that candidates from the party’s left can win beyond safely Democratic constituencies. If El-Sayed loses while Democrats lead the generic congressional ballot by slightly more than 8 points and a Republican president has historically weak approval ratings, the setback to Ocasio-Cortez’s case for 2028 will be difficult to dismiss.
The progressive movement, which hailed El-Sayed’s primary victory as proof of concept, would also face legitimate questions, while Democratic moderates would gain evidence that their approach remains more viable nationally.
The counterargument would be obvious: Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), the centrist El-Sayed defeated by only 1 point, was running even with Rogers at a time when El-Sayed trailed him. A loss would make “Stevens would have won” a Democratic refrain for years.
That being said, Ocasio-Cortez may therefore have committed substantial political capital too early and read too much into progressives’ string of summer primary victories.
El-Sayed is a complicated candidate. Republicans have highlighted his association with controversial figures and alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood, claims he denies. Polling suggests voters remain divided both on him and on the progressive project he represents. A Brookings Institution study of the 2026 primaries found that progressives won only 18 percent of genuinely competitive Democratic contests.
To that end, in Michigan, El-Sayed is running behind other Democrats at both the state and national levels. El-Sayed’s average lead over Rogers is about 2 points, effectively a statistical tie. By comparison, moderate Democrats Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) in Georgia lead their Republican opponents by roughly 10 and 9 points, respectively. Within Michigan, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson leads Rep. John James (R-Mich.) by nearly 6 points on average.
Whether because of personal concerns, ideology or the attacks on his candidacy, El-Sayed is underperforming moderate Democrats and the top of his own state ticket in a state where Democrats have not lost a Senate race in three decades. As Bloomberg News has suggested, the gap between El-Sayed’s standing and that of Benson and other moderates “could reflect a hesitation among Michigan voters to back a left-wing candidate.”
That is the same question Ocasio-Cortez could face nationally in 2028: Can intense enthusiasm among young, white and college-educated progressives translate into support from the independents and working-class voters who decide battleground states?
Trump and Republicans are leaning heavily into that vulnerability, portraying El-Sayed’s brand of “unapologetic progressivism” as another sign that Democrats have moved too far left. Their attacks have helped turn the race into a referendum on the movement’s broader viability.
That brings the discussion back to the stakes for Ocasio-Cortez and the progressive left. As we have previously argued, Michigan’s importance extends well beyond 2026. If Democrats capture the Senate with El-Sayed providing a decisive victory, the party’s 2028 conversation will tilt toward progressives — and perhaps toward Ocasio-Cortez herself.
An El-Sayed victory would give her perhaps the most important credential she still lacks: evidence that her politics can travel beyond deeply blue areas. If he loses, however, Ocasio-Cortez and her allies will spend the next two years answering charges that their movement cost Democrats a winnable seat — and potentially the Senate majority.
Either way, for Ocasio-Cortez and the progressive movement, the 2028 primary is already underway in Michigan.
