By Marcelo Rochabrún Brazil’s richest bankers lost about $10 billion on Monday after a surprise victory by the left triggered a rout in local markets, forcing the stock exchange to suspend trading.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, won a fourth term, defeating conservative Flávio Bolsonaro by 4.4 million votes despite Bolsonaro entering the runoff as the favorite. The result sent markets tumbling on expectations that Lula will pursue a looser fiscal policy, reducing the scope for interest-rate cuts.

In total, the 10 Brazilians among the world’s 500 richest people had lost a combined $15 billion as of noon New York time, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the biggest one-day rout since the list began in 2012.

André Esteves, 58, the founder of Banco BTG Pactual SA who met with Bolsonaro during the campaign, was down $4.4 billion, or roughly 30% of his now $11.3 billion fortune, according to the wealth index.

David Vélez, who controls Nu Holdings Ltd., saw his fortune fall about $2.6 billion. Velez, 45, is Colombian but Nubank is a Brazilian lender with the majority of its operations in the country.

Pedro and Fernando Moreira Salles, who control Itau Unibanco Holding SA, Latin America’s largest bank, were down a total of about $2 billion.

Overall, the four banking executives have a combined net worth of $45 billion, according to Bloomberg’s wealth index, with about 18% of their fortunes evaporating in a single day.

The electoral result also sent the currency down by about 9% on Monday, which will make imports more expensive and could fuel inflation.

The Moreira Salles family is Brazil’s richest clan, consisting of four brothers, though only Pedro, 67, and Fernando, 80, are Itau shareholders. The other two siblings, João and Walter, sold their stakes in 2022 and are prominent Lula backers.

During the campaign, João wrote a piece in , a magazine he founded, decrying Brazilian executives who had met with Bolsonaro over dinner, including Esteves. Walter is an Oscar-winning film director who has in the past also criticized Bolsonaro.

João and Walter, whose holdings are focused on a privately held mining company and Alpargatas SA, the maker of Havaianas flip-flops, had lost a combined $1.2 billion as of noon.
