On Thursday, October 22, the sliding doors at Ben-Gurion Airport's arrivals section opened continuously to waves of passengers, who were surprised to find activists from the The Democrats party holding signs that read, "Welcome, we are going to win!" Others wore T-shirts that said, "Yitzhak Rabin [former Israeli prime minister assassinated in 1995 by a Jewish extremist] was right." Barely off her flight from New York, Batell Blaish-Sultanik, the executive director of the American organization AID Coalition, slipped into the crowd, holding an inflatable airplane balloon in one hand and handing out "Fly & Vote" caps with the other.

For months, AID Coalition, which describes itself as a non-partisan advocacy group dedicated to "strengthening and preserving the democratic foundations of the State of Israel," has been providing logistical support to Israelis living abroad to encourage them to return home and vote.

Apart from diplomats and soldiers stationed abroad, expatriates cannot vote remotely or go to an embassy to participate in the election. As usual, only in-person voting will count for the legislative elections on October 27. "According to our survey, 67,000 Israelis living abroad are on their way here, mostly from the United States and Europe," said Blaish-Sultanik enthusiastically.

Of the 7.3 million people registered for this election, data published by the Central Bureau of Statistics show that 810,000 voters, or one out of every nine, live abroad. This represents a significant pool of votes, especially since turnout among these voters is expected to be massive. In Israel, this election has been compared to turnout in the 1973 elections that followed the Yom Kippur War.
