A cyberattack on a listed unit of GMO Internet Group Inc. is spilling into Japan’s credit market, widening the company’s bond spread as investors grow more concerned about the potential blow to earnings.

The spread on GMO Internet Group’s yen bond due June 2031 widened to about 174 basis points on Oct. 28, from about 122 basis points on Oct. 20, the day before the unauthorized access was disclosed, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The attack targeted a listed group company that provides cloud services also used for foreign-exchange trading. Concerns over compensation costs and the financial impact have pushed up the premium investors demand to hold GMO debt.

The move comes as cyberattacks and unauthorized access incidents increasingly spill over into credit markets.

The GMO incident may not be an isolated case, said Marito Ueda, president of SBI FXTrade Co. “I’m concerned about a deterioration in the image of the FX industry as a whole,” he said.

GMO Internet Inc. said on Oct. 21 that it had suffered unauthorized access and received a ransom demand of about ¥8 billion ($50.7 million). The attacker later published data it claimed contained customer information, while GMO refused to pay and plans to compensate customers for losses.

Companies face a growing risk of being hit suddenly as cyberattacks using artificial intelligence become more widespread, said Kazuma Ogino, senior credit analyst at Nomura Securities Co.

Speaking generally, Ogino said that even after a bond sale has been announced, an issuer may decide to delay or cancel it if the impact on earnings becomes clear.

Nissui Corp. this month postponed a planned ¥13 billion five-year bond after suspected unauthorized access disrupted shipments at a logistics subsidiary. The company cited investor protection in delaying the sale.
