Japan’s two-year government bond auction on Thursday saw stronger demand than the 12-month average as elevated yields underpinned buying.

The bid-to-cover ratio was 4.03, the highest since June, compared with 3.89 at the previous sale, and a 12-month average of 3.84.

Investors are closely watching the tenor given its sensitivity to monetary policy expectations. The two-year yield has eased slightly since hitting multi-decade highs on the back of a global bond selloff last month.

The auction comes as all economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect the Bank of Japan to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its its policy decision announcement on Friday. Meanwhile, Japan’s gauge of underlying inflation surged to the highest in three years in September, backing the case for authorities to continue raising interest rates.
