Mexico’s economic growth accelerated in the third quarter, powered by public and private investments as well as robust exports.

Gross domestic product grew 3.2% in the three months through September compared to the same period last year, according to preliminary data published by the national statistics institute Friday. That’s up from the 2.2% registered in the second quarter and above the 3% median estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Compared to the previous three months, third quarter output rose 0.9%, in line with the estimate and lower than the 1.4% growth seen in the second quarter.

During her first two years in office, President Claudia Sheinbaum has sought to grow investment, especially for infrastructure projects, in a bid to counter uncertainty over future trade ties with the US, the destination for around 80% of Mexican exports. Ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration have yet to reach a deal, which has been blamed for stalling some investments.

Prior to its third-quarter rebound, Latin America’s second-biggest economy hadn’t recorded annual growth near or above 3% since 2023. In that time, GDP has been largely sluggish, reaching 2% quarterly growth only three times since late 2023, including in this year’s second quarter.

In the first quarter, GDP contracted 0.34% compared to the previous three months, sparking fears the economy might tip into a technical recession.
