The European Central Bank will take decisive action if needed to bring inflation back to target, Governing Council member Joachim Nagel said.
Consumer-price growth has picked up again and it cannot be ruled out that prices will continue to rise in the coming weeks, with higher energy costs being a major contributing factor, the Bundesbank president told Bloomberg on Friday.
“Medium-term inflation expectations must remain firmly anchored at our inflation target of 2%,” Nagel said. ”The Governing Council will therefore continue to monitor price developments closely and act decisively if necessary.”The remarks come a day after the ECB kept borrowing costs unchanged following two quarter-point hikes since the Iran war sent energy costs soaring. Euro-area inflation is forecast to quicken to 3.9% in October from 3.8% the previous month.
People familiar with the situation told Bloomberg on Thursday that officials are ready to tighten again in December if the inflation outlook doesn’t improve. At 2.5%, the deposit rate currently is at the upper limit of a range within which monetary policy is deemed to have a neutral effect on the economy.
Nagel stressed that Thursday’s decision to leave rates unchanged “wasn’t an easy one,” given recent inflation trends. President Christine Lagarde on Thursday said that there was a discussion to already hike this month before there was a unanimous decision to keep them on hold for now.
“On the positive side, no significant second-round effects have been observed so far,” Nagel said. But for this to remain the case, it’s “crucial” that inflation expectations stay anchored. “This is also a key message of yesterday’s interest rate decision,” Nagel said.
