Michael David Whatley is a representative of the Republican Party in the state of North Carolina, where he will be competing for a Senate seat against Roy Cooper. He served as chief of staff to U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole from 2004 to 2007. He later went on to become chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party. He made further advancements in his political career by becoming chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2024. Their twin sons, Michael and George, attend Clemson University and North Carolina State University respectively. Their daughter Mary Kate attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In conversations involving artificial intelligence, Whatley mentioned that the US needs to win the global AI race against China, India or any other nation. While also showing his concerns about the growing demand for electricity and water from AI data centers. He also opposed taxpayer subsidies for data centers and urged technology companies to pay for their own infrastructural requirements.

He also advocated for local communities to have a say in where such facilities are built, while arguing that the technology and infrastructure should remain under American control. However, he also acknowledged the economic impact of the conflict on farmers and workers. His stance on the war garnered criticism from his opponent Roy Cooper, who called him a “DC insider” and a “lobbyist” who has represented utility companies like Duke Energy and other big oil companies. He alleges that Whatley holds stock in these companies and profits financially when utility rates rise or oil stock increases due to the war in Iran.

Controversies surrounding WhatleyWhatley has faced criticism due to his close association with President Trump. His Democratic opponent Roy Cooper describes him as a party loyalist, alleging “he will do and say whatever this president tells him to do and say”. In June 2026, Whatley also faced criticism after his campaign posted an AI-generated image showing a Carolina Hurricanes player while cheering for the team during the Stanley Cup Final.

The AI-generated player wasn’t an actual member of the team which added to the criticism surrounding his post. Whatley has also faced criticism over his association with a convicted sex offender named as Harvey Lee West Jr. who held positions in the North Carolina Republican Party during Whatley’s time as state party chairman. West had been convicted of crimes involving a child. Whatley has denied directly appointing West, defending that West was already involved with the party before he became chairman.

Whatley's finances and what lies aheadWhile there were no credible sources for his personal net worth, Federal Election Commission records show that Whatley’s Senate campaign reported $11.27 million in total receipts between June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026. During the same period, the campaign reported $7.81 million in total disbursements and $3.46 million in cash on hand.
