In November 2025, the US House of Representatives voted for a resolution denouncing the "horrors of socialism." On September 1, a new resolution condemned "socialism in all its forms," in particular the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the main socialist organization in the country. Although these texts did not carry the force of law, they showed the anxiety that was spreading among Republicans and some Democrats over the return of the "socialist threat."
Galvanized by the victory of Zohran Mamdani, a longtime member of the DSA who was elected mayor of New York at the end of 2025 and who declared during his inaugural address in January that he wanted to "replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism," the Democratic Party has begun to transform. And it seems to be working. Over a year, 123 candidates backed by the DSA won primaries at every level, including 19 congressional hopefuls. The breakthrough is comparable to that of the ultraconservative Tea Party in 2010, which reshuffled the deck within the Republican Party.
The left-wing magazine The Nation called them "the insurgents." "The insurgency that swept across the United States during the spring and summer of 2026, with its spike in voter turnouts and headline-grabbing primary results for young candidates who are challenging entrenched incumbents," it wrote, is not undermining the Democratic Party. On the contrary, it is giving the party new momentum.
According to a CBS News-YouGov poll conducted in August, 58% of Democratic voters held a "positive view" of socialism. Another poll, carried out the previous month by The Washington Post and Ipsos, revealed that 39% of Americans would consider supporting a Socialist presidential candidate. "This is the most interesting time to be a socialist in America, since at the very least the end of World War II," said Bhaskar Sunkara, 37, president of The Nation and a central intellectual figure of the DSA, who has just published The Blueprint: How Socialism Can Work in the Real World.
