Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott conceded defeat to Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the state's governor's race late Tuesday, handing Democrats the office for the first time since 1995.

In a speech, Abbott said he called Hinojosa to congratulate her after reviewing the results in every county in the state.

"There are still votes to be counted, but mathematically, we’re not going to be able to win this election," he said. Abbott said he told Hinojosa he would assist her and her team during the transition period.

Trump added that Abbott "went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty." Democrats also gained control of the governorships in Iowa and Ohio, with Rob Sand and Amy Acton defeating their Republican opponents, respectively, according to US media reports.
