Polish President Karol Nawrocki is open to meeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk to discuss the country’s escalating constitutional crisis, his spokesman said Wednesday, although no date has been agreed.

"Whenever the prime minister needs to meet the president, the doors of the presidential palace are open," presidential spokesman Rafal Leskiewicz told public broadcaster Polish Radio.

The crisis escalated on Oct. 30 when Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the suspension of Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski and assumed its leadership, moves rejected by Nawrocki and his allies as unlawful.

Police were deployed to the tribunal grounds after Korwin-Piotrowska warned of possible threats to judges and staff. Protests erupted outside, prompting Nawrocki to interrupt a flight to Senegal and return to Warsaw.

The confrontation reflects a longstanding struggle over judicial appointments and constitutional authority between Tusk's governing coalition and the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, whose previous government introduced controversial judicial reforms.

Leskiewicz said the two leaders should meet as soon as possible, suggesting that talks could take place this week or early next week. "There will certainly soon be room in the president's calendar for a meeting with the prime minister," he added.

The comments followed Tusk's offer Tuesday to meet Nawrocki privately to seek ways of reducing tensions over the Constitutional Tribunal, Poland's highest court for constitutional matters.

Speaking after a meeting of the National Security Council, Tusk said the two leaders had a shared responsibility to maintain internal stability, particularly amid mounting security threats from Russia.

“I am ready for a one-on-one meeting this week so that we can consider how to reduce this tension permanently,” Tusk said.

He called for talks without media pressure, while acknowledging that the two leaders would probably continue to disagree on major constitutional questions.

Despite the apparent willingness to meet, Nawrocki's senior aides indicated Wednesday that the president would not soften his criticism of the government's actions.

Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the Presidential Chancellery, told broadcaster TV Republika that any meeting would require a direct discussion of what the president considers violations of constitutional law.

"There is no longer room for courtesy or unnecessary polemics," Bogucki said, arguing that Nawrocki should firmly restate the position he presented at Tuesday's National Security Council meeting.
