Ukraine awarded first lady with state honour for what it called her humanitarian support When Melania Trump convenes representatives from Ukraine and Russia at the White House on Thursday, the talk will focus on the success of a humanitarian mission that led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky.

But the meeting will also provide an opportunity for Melania and her supporters to highlight what they see as her role in securing the six-day ceasefire, which the White House has described as an "unprecedented diplomatic initiative." It was the longest localized pause in hostilities since the war began in 2022.

Melania's senior adviser Marc Beckman, who was a producer of the eponymous 2026 feature documentary about the first lady, has effused that the meeting "represents an extraordinary moment in American history." The summit also appears to be part of a deliberate political strategy by both Moscow and Kyiv.

"It's pretty clear that the Ukrainians and the Russians both want to keep on President Trump's good side," said Daniel Treisman, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, whose research focuses on Russian politics.

"They're willing to make very small concessions or to simply incorporate Melania into something that was already happening," he said, "to create an environment in which President Trump is going to look more favourably on them."

Residents evacuated during a humanitarian mission from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, returning to Ukrainian-controlled territory on Oct. 31. Melania gets credit for the ceasefire As President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans take stock after a devastating midterm election that saw the Democrats seize control of Congress, his wife Melania is preparing to host representatives who will almost certainly praise Washington's actions.

On Thursday, she is scheduled to meet Russia's human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova and Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. Ukrainian media reported that Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's human rights commissioner, and senior lawmaker David Arakhamia will also be in attendance. Melania is expected to deliver public remarks addressing the ceasefire and the humanitarian mission.

The first lady has largely stayed out of the political spotlight throughout Trump's second term. However, she has been credited with helping expedite the return of Ukrainian children separated from their families and taken to Russia.

She also wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the plight of children affected by the war, hand-delivered in October 2025 during a summit in Alaska. She later described having an "open channel of communication" with the leader about Ukrainian children.

Her involvement in the Oleshky ceasefire carries a significantly higher profile. Beyond the White House attributing the breakthrough to her diplomacy, Ukraine has recognized her with one of its highest state honours.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded her the Order of Princess Olha by decree, citing her "significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine." Her adviser, Beckman, was also awarded the Golden Heart for his role in co-ordinating aid.

Unlike Trump, who has announced previous energy ceasefires that never held because Russia continued to pound Ukraine's energy grid, the ceasefire in Oleshky was a successful — albeit limited — agreement, lasting from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1.

This still image taken from an undated drone video released Sept. 12 shows a destroyed buildings in Oleshky. Trapped in Oleshky The war-ravaged community of Oleshky lies south of the Dnipro River, which serves as the front line between Ukrainian and Russian forces in the Kherson region. Russian troops seized the city on the first day of its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022.

Before the war, Oleshky had a population of 24,000. Nearly five years in, an estimated 2,000 residents remained prior to the evacuation, trapped by continuous drone strikes and heavily mined roads. Access to food and medicine had been severely restricted for months due to the fighting, with residents reporting they had to forage for wild plants when supplies ran out. Some said that food deliveries had stopped in May, pushing hundreds of people into starvation.

On Oct. 30, nearly 800 people left the town aboard a convoy of buses. Some relocated to Russia, while others travelled through the Russian-occupied Crimea to Belarus before re-entering Ukraine.

Russia's human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova and Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets speak with journalists during the evacuation of Oleshky on Oct. 30. Both of the officials are expected to meet Melania at the White House on Thursday.

Still, there is doubt that the first lady secured the ceasefire all on her own. The evacuation also followed diplomatic efforts from the Vatican, with Pope Leo speaking in separate telephone calls to Zelenskyy and Putin, contacting the latter from the hospital bed following his surgery.

Oleksandr Khara, executive director of the Centre for Defence Strategies in Kyiv, told CBC News that intelligence agencies in Ukraine and Russia had already conducted the initial groundwork in Oleshky before Melania got involved.

"And then it was a good idea to bring in the first lady as a sort of a symbol of such a good deed," Khara said in a video interview. "I believe the Americans decided to go with this project because it showed the possibility of a ceasefire or some kind of normalization of the environment around this war." Symbolic mediator Even though Khara doesn't believe there is a chance for a more permanent ceasefire or peace deal with Russia anytime soon, he believes that the “mediator role of the first lady is highly appreciated” in Ukraine.

"We will do whatever possible to save more Ukrainian lives," he said. "If she is useful for that, then we will certainly be glad to involve her." Khara added that Melania’s involvement gave Kyiv confidence in Moscow's compliance, as the Kremlin, which is seeking future economic deals with Washington, is wary of angering the U.S. president.

Dmytro and Larysa, residents evacuated during a humanitarian mission from Oleshky, react as they return to Ukrainian-controlled territory, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, at an undisclosed location on Oct. 31.

Russia — which told state media Wednesday that some delegates who planned to attend Thursday’s event had not yet received U.S. visas — praised Melania's involvement and suggested it could set a precedent for future agreements. While Russian state media echoed that sentiment, some expressed criticism.

"How can the ceasefire in Oleshky be considered a step toward peace if it is first and foremost a PR exercise for the U.S. first lady?" wrote Maxim Shevchenko, a Moscow-based commentator, on Telegram.

But Sergey Sanovich, a fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, said while there may be discussion about how big or a role Melania played, the outcome was a “laudable effort.”"There should be more of that,” he told CBC News in an interview by Zoom. "Negotiations are important. It's better when politicians are talking than when they are not." With files from The Associated Press
