Even God voted Democrat. Amid the many lessons of an extraordinary election night in the United States, one of the most fascinating factors in the Republican defeat is religion. Traditionally the preserve of conservatives, religion played an unexpected role. But the brand of exclusive and aggressive Christian nationalism that spread through the Republican ranks suffered a stinging defeat on Tuesday, November 3. The Republican monopoly on God has come to an end.

On the Democratic side, two of the main stars of the election, James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas, both elected to the Senate, placed their faith at the heart of their campaigns. The 37-year-old former seminarian and the 62-year-old pastor, who leads a large Methodist congregation, both referred during the campaign to a quote from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew: "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me."

This generous and open interpretation of Christian faith stands in direct opposition to the version promoted on the right, which imposes a narrow definition of American identity. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, concluding a press briefing on the war in Iran in March, preferred to cite this psalm attributed to King David: "Blessed be the Lord my strength, who teacheth my hands to war and my fingers to fight."
