In the United States, the Democrats saw even their most optimistic forecasts come true in the midterm elections. They secured a considerable majority of at least 229 seats compared to 139 for the Republicans in the House of Representatives (with 67 seats still undecided at the time of publishing) and at least 54 seats to 44 in the Senate (2 seats still undecided). They also achieved unprecedented victories in traditional Republican strongholds such as Kansas and Texas, where they captured the Senate seat (with James Talarico) and the governor's office (with Gina Hinojosa). The win was so large that even some districts redrawn by Republicans to secure their own victories ultimately ended up in Democratic hands.

The reasons behind this tsunami are well known, as poll after poll showed Americans had been fed up for months, not only with the rising cost of living, but also with the brutalization of politics and the shameless corruption of the Trump camp since his return to power in 2025. These factors gave the Democratic Party a boost it had not experienced since Barack Obama's election in 2008.

Another divine surprise for the Democrats was Trump's acceptance (at least for now!) of the election results. For months, the president had regularly insisted he would cry fraud if his side did not win. Two reasons may explain this about-face. Contesting Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election was about challenging a single result. Refusing to concede this time would require challenging thousands of Democratic victories across the states, or picking a few key races to contest – but which ones, and how to rally opposition if those races took place far from Washington?

Moreover, since his name did not appear on the ballots, the president can claim he was not personally at stake. So he gives in to his narcissistic tendency to side with winners and abandon the losing Republicans. On Tuesday night, he announced in an interview with the New York Times that he would try to work with Democratic members of Congress – something that is decidedly out of character for him.
