Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa used her first news conference since winning election to spotlight her scrutiny of the potential sale of state park land to Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp.
Hinojosa said she spoke to the head of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department on Thursday to “request that no action be taken” during her transition to power. reported last month that the state was considering the sale of Boca Chica State Park with SpaceX as the prospective buyer, although Governor Greg Abbott later said no deals would come up for a vote anytime soon.
“It is such an important resource,” Hinojosa told reporters in Austin on Thursday, reiterating comments she made during the campaign, when she said she grew up going to Boca Chica Beach.
Two days after becoming the first Democrat elected as Texas governor since 1990, she also pledged to appoint a bipartisan administration and introduced a transition team that included a labor leader, a former official in the county that includes Houston and a former state lawmaker who described himself as a “conservative Republican.”Hinojosa said she would work with conservatives to improve Texas public school performance and lower costs.
“People are tired of the divisions, of the fighting, tired of the culture wars,” she said, praising Abbott for his “gracious” cooperation with the transition.
The event was hosted at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. As governor, Hinojosa will have the power to appoint members to the university’s Board of Regents, a powerful body that has sought to push the system’s approach to student discipline and curricula in a conservative direction.
