Raphaël Glucksmann was left speechless. The figure from France's moderate left was pressed by his Socialist opponent Ségolène Royal to use the word "genocide" during the first debates of the left-wing primary on September 23 Glucksmann appeared unsettled by the charge led by Royal, who repeated the offensive with support from the head of the Socialists, Olivier Faure, during the second debate on Sunday, October 4. Yet for months now, that word – "genocide," the crime of all crimes – used by some political leaders to describe Israel's war of destruction in the Palestinian enclave in retaliation for the October 7 massacre, has become a political marker.

On substance, the two politicians are aligned. Both potential candidates in the 2027 presidential election have jointly denounced the criminal actions of the Israeli government toward Gazans and have expressed outrage at the forced expansion of settlements in the West Bank. But the term "genocide," brandished by radical-left La France Insoumise (LFI) and a youth movement making it a moral cause, now draws a dividing line within the left.
