The International Monetary Fund warned that Colombia’s fiscal situation is unsustainable, sharpening its assessment of the country’s public finances as the new government seeks the lender’s help to stabilize its accounts.
Colombia ran a primary deficit of about 3.5% of gross domestic product in 2025, while public debt stands at roughly 60% of GDP and is rising, IMF Western Hemisphere Department Director Nigel Chalk said Friday in Bangkok.
“This is not a sustainable, tenable situation,” Chalk said. “We do think that the country needs a concerted effort to bring down debt.”
President Abelardo de la Espriella’s government has entered discussions with the Fund over potential support to address a fiscal situation that the nation’s finance minister has described as the worst in Colombia’s history.
The IMF has been discussing “options and strategies” with Colombian authorities and will send a team to the country in early November to continue those efforts, Chalk said. He said the government is “very committed” to addressing the fiscal situation.
Colombia’s Finance Ministry said earlier this week that the November technical mission will continue exploratory discussions that include an Article IV consultation and potential instruments to improve the country’s financing conditions. The visit will follow a series of meetings between the government and the IMF in recent weeks.
Chalk said the IMF expects Colombia’s economy to expand about 2.25% this year and next, but sees it capable of stronger growth. “The country’s potential is way more than that,” he said. “The country should be growing much faster.”
Finance Minister Miguel Gómez is expecting congress to approve a 2027 budget of about $200 billion, with a deficit forecast to exceed 9% of GDP without a fiscal adjustment. Colombian assets, including bonds and credit default swaps have deteriorated more than its peers in recent weeks as investors are growing anxious about the government’s fiscal plan.
Chalk said the push to repair the public finances is being driven by the government itself, with the IMF in a supporting role.
