“He killed adults and children, his soldiers. He's a terrorist. And that's why I hope that President Trump will be very clear with this position,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed his deteriorating relationship with President Donald Trump on Sunday, offering a sharp defense of Ukraine's war effort and warning against American concessions to Moscow.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Zelenskyy strongly condemned Trump’s recent remarks that appeared to compare himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We can't compare me and Putin. He's aggressor. He occupied us,” Zelenskyy said. “He killed adults and children, his soldiers. He's a terrorist. And that's why I hope that President Trump will be very clear with this position.”The relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy, which has never been particularly strong, has soured significantly over the last few weeks as Trump continues to lash out at the Ukrainian president amid the ongoing war with Russia. Trump has called for Ukraine to elect new leadership and late last week said that he finds Zelenskyy more difficult to deal with than Putin.

Zelenskyy has indicated he is open to holding elections if Russia pauses its attack for 60 days, a point he reiterated on Sunday, as he appeared to attribute the flailing relationship to his honesty toward Trump.

“I can't applaud any decisions or any words of one or another leader if they go against Ukraine, if they are supportive for Russia, and directly for Putin,” Zelenskyy said. “That's why I'm very honest and open to say that he's a killer. And that's why maybe it's not very polite, and maybe not the things the President of the United States wants from me. But better to have partners who are very open and clear than to have those who are killers, even with a smile on their face.”The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But as tensions rise between Trump and Zelenskyy, the White House’s stance toward Russia has also changed.

Trump on Friday signed an executive order waiving key sanctions outlined in the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act, waiving nearly all of the sanctions in the legislation just two days before the implementation deadline. The move effectively allowed Moscow to bypass some severe financial measures that Congress intended as leverage to force Putin to negotiate an end to the war.

The president's decision drew bipartisan backlash, with some lawmakers warning the president may be breaking the law.

Zelenskyy on Sunday said he learned of the policy shift through the media — and warned that the decision will only strengthen Russia.

“I don't know all the reasons why President Trump made such deals with Putin. But it doesn't look that all these steps will push us to peace. I think oppositely. It will strengthen Putin in his will to occupy us, and it's not helpful,” Zelenskyy said.

Though Zelenskyy said Ukraine still trusts the U.S. and Trump, he added that it will be “very difficult” to win the war without the America’s support.

“If the United States will support Putin, I mean, it's unbelievable. It's a tragedy. It's a historic mistake and a big tragedy,” Zelenskyy said. “I don't want to live in illusions, but I think that we have to be pragmatic. If the United States will officially take the side of Russia, of course, if these two countries will be together, of course, we will not prevail and we will not be able to stand.”
