Democratic voters have lower confidence than in years past, while Republicans are more confident in nationwide election administration after Trump’s return to the White House.

Democratic and Republican voters now have similar levels of trust in elections, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center released Tuesday.

The poll, which asked registered voters their expectations for how well the midterms will be run and administered, found that 72% of voters backing Democratic House candidates and 73% of those backing Republicans say they think the elections nationwide will be very or somewhat well-run.

This is also the first time Republicans’ confidence in election administration has edged above the Democrats’ since 2018. Confidence among GOP voters plunged 37 points to 50% in October 2020 after President Donald Trump began casting doubt on the security of pandemic-disrupted elections. The confidence improved to 57% in 2024 and surged with Trump’s return to the White House.

For Democrats, it was the opposite story. Confidence in elections peaked at 90% two years ago before dropping 18 points this year.
