UN human rights chief Volker Türk on Friday condemned an escalation in drone strikes across Sudan, saying the attacks killed at least 306 people and injured hundreds more in the first three weeks of October alone. The strikes have hit markets, funeral gatherings and residential districts as the war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces grinds into its third year.
Türk's office said many of the dead were civilians with no direct role in the fighting, and warned that the growing use of armed drones by both sides has made it harder for aid workers to reach famine-threatened regions such as Darfur and Kordofan. Hospitals, water points and markets have increasingly come under fire, deepening a humanitarian crisis the UN already ranks among the world's most severe.
The army and the RSF have traded blame over the strikes, and neither side has claimed responsibility for most individual attacks. Regional mediation efforts have repeatedly stalled, and aid agencies say funding shortfalls are limiting their response even as displacement climbs across Sudan and spills into neighbouring Chad and South Sudan.
