Six weeks and numerous rounds of talks after a tight general election, Sweden is no closer to a government. Center Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist on Monday said she had not succeeded in her efforts to form a centrist coalition as she reported back to the speaker of parliament after a week of talks with other party chiefs.
Thand Ringqvist was asked last week by the speaker Andreas Norlén to scope out the possibility of a five-party centrist grouping to be headed by Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson. Norlén selected the former McKinsey consultant to lead the talks as she holds the keys to breaking a political deadlock after the September election.
The Center leader said that “while there is a majority for centrist policies there is currently no majority for a centrist government.”Thand Ringqvist’s failure is the latest twist in an already knotty process to form a government. Andersson’s bloc of her Social Democrats, Center, Left and Greens edged a September election with 176 seats versus 173 for center-right incumbent Ulf Kristersson and his allies.
But talks among the four stalled over the structure of a new coalition. Center says it can’t back the inclusion of the Left in the cabinet because it objects to that party’s views on matters including taxation and state ownership. Meanwhile, the Left says it won’t support any government it isn’t part of.
Amid the impasse, Center pitched uniting three parties from Andersson’s bloc with two from Kristersson’s, but Thand Ringqvist’s chances of success looked slim from the outset. One of the parties from Kristersson’s bloc immediately ruled out swapping sides, while the other said it would only do so in extreme circumstances like a war. Speaker Norlén must now decide how to move the process forward.

Under the Swedish system, four parliamentary votes can be held on candidates for prime minister before a new election must take place. So far, one vote has taken place on Andersson, which she lost.
Norlén’s next step could be to ask Andersson or Kristersson to lead more talks or he could call a second vote on Andersson.
