Wes Streeting, the UK’s defense secretary, went on a media blitz to push a new “Be Ready” campaign to boost Brits’ preparedness for crises — which he said could range from floods and wildfires to terrorism and cyber attacks and ultimately even war.

“There’s no sugarcoating the fact that we do live in a more dangerous and turbulent world,” Streeting told BBC’s “Newsnight.”

“It’s about saying to households across the country to be ready by just having some everyday essentials indoors should there be disruption from these sorts of events.”

The senior cabinet member listed emergency essentials like canned food, diapers, pet supplies, torches, batteries, backup cellphone charging packs and having “enough cash indoors if the local payment systems were down.”While Streeting said the “Be Ready” campaign was for any emergency, including natural disasters, it came at the same time as he gave ominous warnings about the European nation having to prepare for war, suggesting it could be likely within a few years.

“Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity,” he wrote in the Telegraph.

“By 2030, their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win. To prevent the worst, we have to prepare for it.”

Streeting warned that the threat to the UK isn’t just posed by “Russian tanks rolling across [its] borders.”“It is also the growing threat of state-sponsored terrorism, sabotage and hostile acts designed to disrupt our lives, undermine our security and spread fear in our communities,” he said.

Streeting told the Sun that the government’s plea to stock up “is not a big ask.”“I want people to be alert, not alarmed,” he said.

More than 2,500 British and French troops took part in war games in Germany last week, exercises designed to show how NATO could defend itself from an attack.

Some 600 paratroopers carried out a parachute drop from RAF A400M planes in Sennelager, Germany, as part of Exercise Rhino Titan.

The UK government’s push follows that of the European Union, which in March last year urged the bloc’s almost 450 million citizens to stockpile three days’ worth of supplies.
