Critics believe that fiscal and political motives are behind the administration’s hesitation. Jakarta allocated 400 billion rupiah (US$22 million) this year for the National Disaster Management Agency, a sharp drop from 2 trillion rupiah last year.

Yosafat said he would like to invite central government officials to situate themselves in and work from disaster zones. “It will help them understand the scale and severity of the destruction involved and their consequences for human lives.”The protesters are also demanding a halt spending on populist programmes such as President Prabowo Subianto’s free meals scheme and increasing militarisation of the civilian sphere.
“我们呼吁立即终止‘白象工程’,例如免费餐食计划和红白合作社,并将资金转投免费教育,”Yosafat 说。

“The escalating air pollution from blazing forest and land fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, alongside chronic pollution across Java, must serve as a wake-up call for all,” she said.
她补充说,清洁空气是一项基本人权,政府有责任保护它。通过学生抗议,“我们现在有一个关键的窗口期和机会,将公民权利和公共卫生重新置于国家议程的首位——绝不妥协”。
Clean air was a fundamental human right and the government had a duty to protect it, she added. Through the student protests, “we have a crucial window and opportunity right now to put citizens’ rights and public health back at the top of the national agenda — without compromise”.
