Autumn is the most beautiful season to explore Maine, when its magnificent landscapes blaze with red foliage. The northeastern state has been welcoming a parade of the Democratic Party's biggest names. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York congresswoman, was the latest on Thursday, October 22, coming to campaign for Troy Jackson, the party's candidate in the upcoming November 3 midterm election. Before her, former vice president Kamala Harris and Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar had all hurried to Maine. Even former president Barack Obama recorded a video endorsement.

The maples have nothing to do with this sudden interest. If Democrats want to retake the Senate, they need to gain four seats. And the seat held by Republican Senator Susan Collins, 73, who has been reelected continuously for nearly 30 years, has been singled out as one of the potential prizes. The road to winning back the upper chamber of Congress runs through Maine.

"We've got a Senate race to win here. We've got a logger that we are hoping to send to the United States Senate to fight for working people, higher wages and our healthcare," Ocasio-Cortez told an enthusiastic audience on Thursday. The crowd had gathered in an old concert hall in Portland, the most populous city in the state, for an event called "Students Against Billionaires."
