The artificial intelligence (AI) boom could be a super-long cycle that would drive productivity and bring down costs, according to the chairmen of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, indicating that the ongoing pullback in technology stocks could be a speed bump temporarily.

David Solomon, who is also Goldman Sachs’ CEO, and Ted Pick, also CEO of Morgan Stanley, touted the prospects of the cutting-edge technology and its demand at the Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

They also highlighted the resilience of the US economy, which withstood some of the global headwinds such as the oil shock spurred by the prolonged military conflicts in the Middle East.

The comments by the pair of Wall Street's biggest firms may offer some solace to invealso stors who have been rattled by recent sell-offs in AI bets. Latest spending plans by some of the US hyperscalers stoked concerns that the enormous capital expenditure on AI infrastructure buildouts may not generate comparable returns.

In China, the unwinding of technology stocks sent a key benchmark into a bear market, prompting government intervention to stem further declines.

“When I look at five to 10 years, I’m really excited about the evolution of this technology, the super cycle, the deployment of technology in enterprises, the ability for it to drive productivity. I think that’s something we all have to be excited about,” Solomon said.

“There’ll be bumps in the road. We’ve got to figure out how to manage it and govern it. There’ll be winners, there’ll be losers. But it’s certainly a pretty exciting time when you look at the change that’s coming.”The AI investments would continue to underpin the US economic growth in the foreseeable future, according to Pick. He estimated that the world’s largest economy would invest between US$10 trillion and US$15 trillion in the AI buildouts in the following decade, driving the real economic growth by 50 to 70 basis points.

The US hyperscalers, or the cloud-compute service providers including Alphabet and Amazon, have poured US$750 billion into AI data-centre investments this year.

AI was a boon to small businesses in the US, which generate 65 per cent of the job growth in the nation, as the technology was able to whittle down the cost of starting a business and accelerate the infrastructure of a new business to a much more attractive place, Solomon said.

“These are enormous opportunities,” he added. “But there won’t be a straight line. Will things go right? Absolutely.”“Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are very fortunate because we’re in the epicentre of these developments, where we can act as an adviser, as a financier, an underwriter in bringing the different components together,” Pick explained.

US corporate earnings remained resilient, as growth from mega tech companies offset weak consumer confidence and these companies continued to get funding accesses to equities, debts and merger and acquisition markets, he added.

“So it’s a very exciting time to be teaming up and working with these important players on something that is obviously world changing,” Pick said.
