How the GOP Could Keep Control of Senate Headlines in recent months have focused on how Democrats are making inroads in red parts of the country. But Republicans, who start with a majority of 53-47, still have a good chance of keeping the Senate. Here’s how they could do it: Defend their home turf. Republicans will have to brush back Democrats in deep-red states like Kansas, Mississippi and South Carolina and avoid any big upsets.
Limit their battleground losses. Democrats are on track to flip North Carolina and have good chances for additional pickups in a group of closely competitive states including Iowa, Ohio, Texas, Maine and Alaska. If Republicans can successfully defend more than two of these, they could be on track to preserving their majority.
Make some counterattacks. GOP candidates have chances to flip Democratic seats in Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire. Just one of those would put Republicans in a much stronger position.
