Kansas turns blue after 94 years as Democrats storm Republican Senate strongholds Adam Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall in the Kansas Senate race. The result gives Kansas its first Democratic US senator since 1932.

Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton has defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall in Kansas, securing a historic victory that ends the party's 94-year losing streak in Senate elections in the traditionally Republican state. Hamilton's victory makes him the first Democrat to represent Kansas in the US Senate since 1932.

The upset comes amid growing dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's handling of the economy and the war with Iran, with Hamilton successfully appealing to moderate Republicans and independent voters. Rising living costs, cuts in healthcare and food assistance, and Trump's tariffs were among the issues he highlighted during his campaign.

Hamilton's victory marks a major Democratic gain, particularly as Donald Trump won Texas by more than 16 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. The Senate race had initially been considered safely Republican.

"This is amazing. We really did make history," Hamilton told supporters after his victory. "We're not flyover country. We're the heart of the country," he said.

In his victory speech at a hotel in the Kansas City area, Hamilton said voters across party lines were unhappy with developments in Washington and the growing political divisions in the country.

"I think the people in Kansas, Republicans and Democrats, are saying that what's happening in Washington is not OK. Kansans are also fed up with the way politicians divide us," he said.

Hamilton, 62, is the founding pastor of the 25,000-member Church of the Resurrection in the Kansas City area, the country's largest United Methodist congregation. He campaigned on affordability and bipartisanship, describing himself as an "independent-minded Democrat", while Republicans tried to portray him as far left.

The Republican Party had mounted an extensive campaign to rescue Marshall, with Trump holding two rallies in Kansas in October, while Vice President JD Vance also campaigned for the incumbent. However, the efforts failed to prevent Hamilton from flipping the seat. The campaign also witnessed record spending for a Senate race in Kansas, with approximately USD 110 million spent by both sides.
