Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the outcome of the US midterm elections showed that Americans had rejected further war with Iran. The comment came after Donald Trump acknowledged the conflict's role in the Republican Party's losses.

Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the result of the US midterm elections sent a message that the American public was opposed to continuing the conflict with Iran. "We endorse this message," Ghalibaf said, framing the vote as a rejection of war.

The remark came shortly after President Donald Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict had played a role in the Republican Party's loss of both chambers of Congress. Trump had previously signalled, more indirectly, that the war had become a political liability for his party.

Iranian officials have been holding indirect talks with Washington through Qatar in recent weeks, and have said steps were being taken to ease tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Officials in Tehran believe the election outcome could strengthen their position in those negotiations.
