Former President Clinton released a statement following the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the midterm elections urging them to work “with humility and determination” to rebuild public trust.

“Last night’s victory gives us an opportunity and a responsibility to rebuild trust,” Clinton said his statement posted to social platform X Wednesday afternoon. “We should do so with humility and determination, and an open hand, not a clenched fist, to those who didn’t vote for our candidates.”“I’ve always believed we do better when we work together. Now, the American people have given us another chance to prove it. Let’s make the most of it,” he added.

The Democrats won a Senate majority and are on track to win 54 to 56 seats. The party secured big wins in battleground states like Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan and Maine. The party also took control of the House and is projected to win around 255 seats, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Candidates made history in states like Michigan, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers to be the first Muslim American elected to the upper chamber. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton is going to be the first Democratic senator from the Sunflower State since 1939. In Texas, Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D) defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott to be elected as the first Latina elected governor in the state, according to The Dallas Morning News.

“The extraordinary candidates elected last night reflect the diversity of America and the strength of our party,” the former president said in his statement.

In his statement, Clinton alluded to the importance of “helping families with the cost of living and protecting their health care.”Democrats across the country have campaigned on lowering costs.

Recent polls show that the rising cost of living was a top concern for a lot of voters. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 48 percent of voters ranked cost of living as the most important factor in deciding their vote. A Gallup survey, conducted last month, found nearly half of the respondents marked the economy and healthcare as an extremely important factor before casting their ballots.

“The American people have given us clear direction: to put their needs ahead of the chaos and corruption coming out of Washington,” Clinton said.
