The Philippines on Thursday voiced optimism that the Democratic Party’s resounding midterm election win would prompt the United States to adopt “a different approach” to President Donald Trump’s hardening immigration crackdown that has ensnared many Filipinos.

Trump’s Republican Party was routed in Tuesday’s polls, with the Democrats taking control of both houses of the US Congress and gaining legislative power to check his policies.

The drubbing has given hope to Jose Manuel Romualdez, Manila’s envoy to Washington, who said potential changes to the US immigration rules would “definitely” ease the concerns of Filipinos with questionable visa status.

“Some of the policies that affect us, including immigration, there could be some changes because the Democrats have been pushing for a different approach, especially in the detention and the arrest of illegal aliens in the United States,” Romualdez said on a radio show, referring to the term used by the government to describe undocumented immigrants.

The ambassador told Super Radyo DZBB that “hopefully it would be a different kind of approach, maybe. But we will see what happens”.

Romualdez said the Philippine embassy in Washington was working closely with the Department of Homeland Security to help affected Filipinos.

He earlier urged undocumented Filipinos to leave the US voluntarily to avoid getting caught in the enforcement blitz carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The US has ramped up its immigration clampdown in recent months, arresting, deporting and holding people in detention centres, including those allowed to stay in the country.

According to the Deportation Data Project, ICE agents took 49,571 people into custody in July, a 15 per cent rise from 43,021 arrests a month earlier.

Many Filipino green card holders were also rounded up during the months-long nationwide operations that dominated the midterm campaigning, where some Democratic contestants called for ICE to be dismantled.

ICE agents even arrested five undocumented immigrants on election day near polling centres in Arizona during a raid that civil rights groups said “sends a message of intimidation for voters”.

In September, a cancer-stricken Filipino man was released on “humanitarian grounds” after spending more than two months at a detention centre. He was arrested in the US on an old criminal charge from the Philippines while applying for citizenship.

His case also drew accusations from migrant advocacy groups that Philippine embassy and consulate officials failed to provide adequate help to citizens abroad.

The diplomatic mission told Filipinos to consult a qualified US immigration lawyer “for advice appropriate to their individual circumstances”.

Some Democrats who won Tuesday’s election have proposed to disband ICE and end funding for detention and deportation operations.

“You can’t reform ICE, you can’t retrain ICE, you have to abolish ICE,” Abdul El-Sayed said during the primary in Michigan, Latin Times reported. He will become the first US Muslim senator after defeating Republican Mike Rogers.

Amnesty International also echoed the senator-elect’s demand. “For the US government to have an immigration enforcement system that complies with international human rights law and standards, ICE needs to be abolished and we need to start over,” it said in a September statement.
