US midterm results showed a clear demand to stop the Iran war amid skyrocketing oil prices, European Parliament lawmaker tells Anadolu Trump may now come under pressure to reduce US troops and shift his Middle East policy, according to the lawmaker, who chairs the European Parliament’s subcommittee on security and defense Strack-Zimmermann argues Europeans should continue taking more responsibility within NATO for their own defense despite the election results US midterm election results are likely to increase pressure on President Donald Trump to change his Middle East policy, senior German lawmaker Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann said, adding that this could create new momentum for a diplomatic solution. “You could see this, many people in the US said that Trump has to stop the war in the Middle East. And I'm sure now they will try to change this policy,” Strack-Zimmermann, who chairs the European Parliament’s subcommittee on security and defense, told Anadolu in an interview.

She said that despite earlier optimistic expectations for a regime change in Iran, the situation has evolved into a catastrophe.

“I think that Trump has now to reduce the troops.”“They are not interested in a war, especially in the Middle East,” she added, referring to the opinion of the American people.

Voters felt war’s economic costs The European Parliament lawmaker said US voters felt the economic impact of the war with Iran, which contributed to the electoral losses for Trump and his Republican Party, with Democrats regaining control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“People are really afraid about the costs, about the situation…. health insurance, all these things which are so important for people,” she said.

Many Americans live outside urban areas and rely on cars to travel long distances, making rising oil prices a particular burden on their daily lives, she said. European politicians view the results as “a victory for democracy,” she added.

“I think it's really good news from the United States that .... the hope for many, many millions of people ... are now in a majority,” the veteran liberal Free Democratic Party politician said.

The US midterm elections were closely watched by European politicians amid strained ties with the Trump administration.

Disagreements ranged from the Iran war and trade disputes to Trump’s criticism of European allies for insufficient defense spending and doubts over US commitments to NATO.

Trump’s approach to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his close dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin has also drawn concern in European capitals.

The midterm results were seen as a test of whether Trump would continue those policies or face pressure for a shift. ‘Europe must keep building strength’Strack-Zimmermann, a longtime defense specialist who previously chaired the German Parliament’s Defense Committee, said the election results were positive for Europe, but the details of any expected policy change were not clear at this stage. She pointed out that Democrats will control Congress while Trump remains president for two more years.

The senior lawmaker said Europeans should continue strengthening their own defense capabilities, regardless of the midterm outcome.

“We started two, three years ago to be more independent, to become more strong in Europe, to become a strong pillar in NATO and we will continue whatever happens in the US,” she said.

Strack-Zimmermann underlined that these efforts were not an alternative to NATO, but a way to strengthen the alliance’s European pillar as the US shifts its geostrategic focus to the Indo-Pacific region.

Uncertainty remains on Ukraine While expressing hope for a change in US policy on Ukraine, she also cautioned against overly optimistic expectations after the election result.

“We will see if they are really courageous enough to see that the war in Ukraine affects not only Europe, also the values of the US,” she said, stressing that Russia’s war is not only against Ukraine, but against the rules-based international order, peace and fundamental freedoms.

On the prospects for more support, the senior lawmaker added: “I don't know whether we will see a change because it's a question of money, and the Democrats want to reduce the budget for military equipment.”At the same time, she noted that European lawmakers maintain close dialogue with their US counterparts and will intensify these exchanges in the coming weeks to deepen cooperation.

Behind the curtain, many politicians on both sides of the Atlantic are really interested in working closely together, Strack-Zimmermann said.

“So, we are now on the right way, but we are really irritated about the situation that Mr. Trump is so close to Mr. Putin,” she added.

“This is unbelievable and we hope that the Democrats make pressure to stop this behavior.”
